Ani DiFranco – Hypnotized

A beautiful song by Ani Difranco. I’ve always loved the imagery in her music. The lyrics below paint such a vivid picture. The sky is grey, and it feels like rain and the crushing of wet gravel beneath your feet.

Hypnotized

So that’s how you found me
Rain falling around me
Lookin down at a worm
With a long way to go
And the traffic was hissing by
And I was homesick
And I was high

I was surrounded by a language
In which I could say only hello
And thank you very much
But you spoke so I could understand
And I drew a treasure map on your hand

And you were no picnic
You were no prize
But you had just enough pathos
To keep me hypnotized

The map led to an island
In a sea of store-bought dreams
Where soulless singers sang
Over beats built by machines

And lovely girls were hovering
Above my head like gulls
With their long slender necks
And their delicate skulls

And I was no picnic
I was no prize
But I had just enough sweetness
To keep you hypnotized

So that’s how you found me
Rain falling around me
Lookin down at a worm
With a long way to go

Better Than Ezra – Our Last Night

For when you have to leave something behind.

We were standing in an empty room

The moonlight was falling

You were holding my hand when the car pulled up for you

And I could have spent a life with you

But those days were over

You were calling my name when your face faded from view

I remember waking up with you

The days doing nothing

You meant more to me then than I think you ever knew.

But you were gonna be a doctor, movie star

A poet at a Nobel seminar

I hope the world never tore that out of you

I was waving as you drove away

The sunlight was falling

You were writing backwards in a dusty window pane
